ISO 21989:2004 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 122 “Packaging” of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and as EN ISO 21989:2005 was prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 261 “Packaging”, the secretariat of which is held by AFNOR , has been replaced.

This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard by March 2006 at the latest, either by publication of a similar text or by approval, and conflicting national standards shall be withdrawn by March 2006 at the latest.

This document replaces EN 1898:2000. According to the internal regulations of CEN/CENELEC, the national standards organizations of the following countries are obliged to implement this European Standard: Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and United Kingdom.

The text of ISO 21898:2004 has been approved by CEN as EN ISO 21898:2005 without any changes.
